The German ship MW 168 \ Wölkenburg was a workhorse for the German civil transport organization Transportflotte Speer when she went down in the deep at Tønsberg Tønne in 1944. The vessel had through the years had several names, and was also one of the many vessels the Germans thought of using in operation Seelöve in 1941, the invasion of Britain. But this operation was never launched as everybody knows, and the vessel was set to other tasks. Under a period the vessel sailed under the name Motor Wiking 168 and did service as a freighter under Einsatz Wiking, which explains the name. The MW vessels were mainly confiscated or requisitioned vessels from occupied countries under the Third Reich, and all the vessels got the name MW followed by a number. From histirical souces you can see that the listing stopped at 190. With other words quite an impressive fleet. MW 168 was originally a river barge from Holland which was confiscated by the German Speerflotte and put to service as a coastal freighter. The vessels history ended when she stranded on 3. October 1944 near Tønsberg Tønne in Vestfold county. Today MW 168 lies on a depth from fifteen to twenty meters, standing on her reel in a good condition. Also see the wreck of Tommy who also did service as a MW ship under second world war...
