In a time where many peoples searched for a better fortune in America, a vessel put an end to her own short history outside the county of Vestfold. The Danish emigrant ship Hekla stranded on Sydostgrunnen outside of Sandefjord in Vestfold on Saturday 15. February 1883. Hekla was on a journey from Copenhagen to Newport through Kristiania ( Oslo ) with passengers and other goods. It took several days before Hekla was lost in the deep, and some of the cargo and personal things were saved from the ship. Some time after the Anda Brothers saved the bow of the ship a while later, The wreck is pretty much broken down, the remains of Hekla can be found on twenty to thirty meters depth under the red pole on the east side of the Sydostgrunnen outside Sandefjord in open waters.
