Det
norske dampskipet Kong Ring gikk på en mine nær Leangen
fyr på natten til 26. desember 1941 under en reise fra Alteid
til Narvik med over 300 tyske soldater ombord. Minen var lagt ut av
den russiske ubåten K-1 under kommando av Mikhail Petrovich i
dagene mellom 15 og 16 desember. Kong Ring ble truffet på babord
side, og like etter eksplosjonen gikk også dampkjelen i filler.
Forsøk på å sette livbåtene på vannet
feilet, og nødbluss ble ikke oppdaget av noen. Seks minutter
etter eksplosjonene forvant Kong Ring i dypet med baugen først,
og det er antatt at 286 mennesker mistet livet i denne ulykken. Vraket
av Kong Ring ble funnet av Bjørn Stenvold på høsten
2004 og hviler på kjølen på en dybde av 105. Vraket
befinner seg utenfor Grøtsund i Ullsfjorden ...
The Norwegian steamship Kong Ring went
on a mine near Leangen lighthouse in the night of 26. December
1941 under a journey from Alteid to Narvik with over 300 German
soldiers onboard. The mine was laid by the Russian submarine K-1
under command of Mikhail Petrovich in the days between 15 and
16. December. Kong Ring was hit on her port side, and shortly
after the explosion also the steam boilers went to pieces. Attempts
to put the lifeboats on the water failed, and signal flares was`nt
seen be anyone. Six minutes after the explosions Kong Ring disappeared
in the deep with her bow first, and it is presumed that 286 peoples
lost their lives in this accident. The wreck of Kong Ring was
found by Bjørn Stenvold in the autumn 2004 and rest on
her keel on a depth of 105 meters. The wreck is located outside
Grøtsund in the Ullsfjorden..

Did service on the route
Oslo-Kiel-Hamburg until 1939 for the Norwegian
company Norske Søndenfjeldske DS. Laid up in Oslo harbor when
WW2 broke out, used as a storage ship until the German occupation
of Norway in 1940. Kong Ring was late in 1940 then given AA-guns and
put in service for the Germans.
