The German steamship Helga Ferdinand went down after having been attacked by British airplanes under a journey in convoy northwards along the Norwegian coast on 8. November 1944. The convoy took cover in Midt-Gulen to await further escort and the dark before they should continue their journey north. On the afternoon the ships are spotted by a British reconnoisance plane, and shortly after Aquila and Helga Ferdinand are sunk by a group of British airplanes. Today the wreck of Helga Ferdinand stands on her keel a a nice "Donald Duck" wreck on a depth of forty five to sixty meters. On bow and stern you can still see the antiaircraft guns, and the wreck itself is very much intact. The wreck site is also protected against bad weather, and is accesable under almost all kinds of weather. To get out to the wrecks you need a boat...
