UJ 1704 was originally
as a trawler for the in 1939 under the name Uhlenhorst, but was
after the outbreak of the second world war requisitioned by Kriegsmarine
and rebuilt to a uboat hunter. On the evening on 12. December
1942 the Germans awaited the pocket battleship Lützow and
the support vessels which were should pass Haugesund on their
way to Northern Norway. UJ 1704 patrolled therefore in Skudefjorden
to secure against enemy uboats, and on the night she stranded
on Trebåen south of Skudenes in heavy winds and high waves.
The vessel was stuck for some hours and the crew went in the lifeboats
and sent out an emergency signal. A pilot vessel saved together
with a German guard boat and the tug Jomsburg the crew. Four men
from UJ 1704 perished in this accident. Today the wreck of UJ
1704 rest on a depth of twenty meters and is very broken down
thanks to the harsh weather out here. Only the bow section and
the stern are still partly whole. The wreck is unfortunately hard
to find, so the best is to get helt from local divers who knows
about the wreck. To get out to the wreck site you need nice weather
and a boat...
