The German freighter Palime went lost after she was hit by a laid by the french submarine Rubis near Jæren on 5th. June 1940 under a journey from Wilhelmshaven to Trondheim with a cargo of ammunition in an armed convoy. Palime was originally a freighter which before the outbreak of second world war went in traffic with transport of fruit around the world. Shortly after the outbreak of second world war the vessel was requisitioned by Kriegsmarine, and was put in service with transport of supplies for the German forces. After she was damaged by the explosion on the 5th of June 1940, the course was set towards land under tow from two German escort vessels, and soon after Palime was put ashore. One of the escorts, M11, thereafter quickly headed north to search for a hostile submarine that they thought had torpedoed Palime, but hit a mine and disappeared in the deep within a minute herself. After the accident Palime was standing on the reef, and the Germans got help from a company from Holland to rescue the vessel, but under working on the wreck a larger explosion was set of and and killed a group of civil workers. Further attempts to salvage the vessel was then abandoned. In the remaining years of second world war the wreck of Palime was used as a target vessel under German excersises, and the wreck was then heavily damaged and broken down. In the sixties the wreck was partly salvaged, and old grenades that has exploded in the following years since Palime went down in the deep has broken the wreck totally down. The remains of Palime rest two hundred meters from land on Jærens rev south of Honsvika, but there are not much left of the wreck. Wreck debris and machine parts lies spread around on the northside of the reef on a depth of forty to sixty meters. To get out to the wreck site you need a boat and nice weather...
