The steamship Achilles
was laid down in Bremen in 1922, and did service in the waters
around Europe until the outbreak of the second world war. In 1940
Achilles was requisitioned by the German Kriegsmarine, and did
service with transportation of war material. On 31 December 1944
Achilles laid at anchor in Flekkefjord harbor with a cargo of
ammunition, when British airplanes from the squadrons 143, 235
and 248 from RAF attacked the city and the ships that laid in
the harbor. In the harbor laid also the German ships Palermo and
Wally Faulbaum, and under the attack Palermo also sank, while
Wally Faulbaum was damaged from gunfire from the British
airplanes. After the second world war there were salvaged on the
wreck of Achilles, but the cargo was mainly left in peace. In
1948 the also the wreck of Palermo was raised and put under Norwegian
flag with the name Nina. Today the wreck of Achilles rest in shallow
waters merely fifty meters from ashore right outside the main
quay in Flekkefjord harbor. It is not allowed to dive on the wreck
of Achilles because of the dangerous cargo and the position of
the wreck in the harbor...
