In the first years
of this century it was popular to buy inexpensive ships from England
and put them in service under Norwegian flag. As so many ships
before her, Sir John Lawrence was on her way to her new home i
Norway when the accident happened. The barque stranded on Strutsrevet
outside of Østfold county on the 3. October 1904, during
a journey from London to Fredrikstad. The crew of thirteen men
went down with the ship in the cold deep water. In 1907 there
were launched rescue operations to rescue inventory and such on
the wreck that laid in shallow water then, and the wreck was thereafter
left in peace for 89 years. The vessel sank to a depth of forty
meters. Norwegian Naval museum in Oslo has put some of the inventory
from the barque to their exhibition and the newspapers also published
the news which included some photos from the wreck. Sir John Lawrence
was found be scuba divers in 1996. A boat is necessary to visit
the remains of John Lawrence...
