The
panzership Norge was the second and last panzership Norway had left
after PS Eidsvold had been sunk by the Germans outside Narvik early
in the morning of April 9th 1940. PS Norge had through her service
done many different missions. Salute for King Haako VII enttry as
king for Norway in 1905, and transport home for the then deceased
Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson after his death
in Paris in 1910 to mention some. The panzership Norge laid at anchor
at the entrance to Narvik harbor when the commandant Askim received
was notified that German destroyers came in the Ofotfjorden. Norge
therefore left her posting and placed herself in the harbor. Shortly
after Norge had got in position they spotted two unknown destroyers
out at Ankenes, but shortly after they disappeared in the thick
snowy weather after the commandant on Norge had released warning
shots against the ships. At 0440 in the morning they spotted two
German destroyers amidst the trading vessles inside the harbor,
and this time the order to open fore was given. PS Norge fired nine
shots with her guns, but thanks to the poor visibility they did
not manage to hit the German destroyers. The two German destroyers
who turned out to be Bernd Von Arnim and George Thiele, embarked
now troops on the quay, and took immediately up the fight against
PS Norge after. Bernd Von Arnim launched seven torpedoes towards
the panzership, and the last two hit PS Norge at the midship and
stern. In less than one minute Norge got listing to starboard side,
and sank in the deep with her bow first. Of the crew of 101 men,
only nine men including the commandant Askim survived the sinking,
and was picked up by Bernd Von Arnim. Partly salvaged "in situ",
but still there are wreck debris left. Today the wreck of PS Norge
rest in the middle of Narvik harbor on a depth of twenty meters.
At present it is not allowed to dive on the wreck...
