In September 1943 the Italian ship Fidelitas laid at anchor in the harbor at Bordeaux, when she was confiscated by the German occaption forces there. The ship was thereafter transferred to the German company Deutsche DSG ( Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft ), and put in civil service for the Third Reich. On 27 November 1944 Fidelitas was in a convoy together with the cargoship Jersberg and four German escort-vessels in towards Ålesund city. When the convoy came into Sulafjorden outside Ålesund htey suddenly were attacked by ten Australian airplanes of the type Beaufighters form the squadrons 404 and 489 which were sent out on an Anti-Shipping mission. The Beaufighters assaulted with machine-cannons and torpedoes, but none of the torpedoes hit the convoy. But Fidelitas was heavily damaged in the fire from the airplanes, and also Hersberg and a German escort-vessel was damaged under the attack. Fidelitas was so heavily damaged that she later disappeared in the deep. On Fidelitas 35 men of the crew perished, while the Australian pilots got home with only three damaged airplanes. And in the Sulafjord the wreck of Fidelitas was left in peace until 1988 when the wreck was located by divers. The wreck rests on a depth of 107 meters, and has been a target for a few expeditions of technical divers after she was located. In 1997 came the Norwegian naval vessel KNM Tyr and took pictures of the wreck, and salvaged Fidelitas ship bell...
