At Lyme Bay outside Portland, rest the worlds only wreck of an aircraft-carrier submarine on a depth of thirty five meters in almost perfect condition. The M 2 disappeared in the deep during an excersise in 1932. The crew on M2 were proud of the speed their submarine could manage, and tried all the time to set a new record. 26. January the M 2 dived down in the deep with a crew of sixty men, and was never to be seen or heard from again. 29. January all hope was lost for the M 2, and eight days later the wreck was located. The door to the hangar was open, and the airplane still on board. It seemed like the hangar was opened while the submarine was still under water. The airplane was quickly salvaged, but after nearly a year with attempts to salvage the M 2, the wreck was left to rest in the deep outside Portland. The wreck rest today on a depth of thirty five meters in a very good condition southwest of Chesil Beach, and has become a very popular divesite in the area...
