San Franisco Maru is one of the many ship wrecks in Truk which was sunk during the ferocious air assaults on the Micronesian islands during second world war. The ship laid at anchor in Truk Lagoon with a cargo of military material when she 16. February 1944 was attacked repeatedly by American airplanes. One 250 kg bomb hit the midship, and she started to take in water. San Fransisco Maru disappeared in the deep, taking with her the large amount of military material. The wreck was found in 1973, and is often called " The Million Dollar Wreck " because of the cargo she had on board. San Fransisco Maru laid herself on a depth of forty five to sixty meters, and the deck is the shallowest part. The wrecks stands as a classic Donald Duck wreck, and much of the cargo can still be seen on and around the wreck. Cargo on the deck consist of trucks and type 97 battle tanks. In the cargo holds you can see mines, torpedoes, bombs, artillery, anti tank weapons, ammunition, airplane motors and parts, and fuel barrels. San Franasisco Maru is considered one of the most exciting wrecks in Truk because of her cargo and not least the condition of the wreck. She rest today in the deep at Eten Anchorage and the place is well known for excellent visibility...
