USS Saratoga was one of many ships that after second world war got the doubtful honor of ending her days under some of USA`s nuclear bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific ocean. Saratoga who was originally built as a Lexington class battlecruiser participated during second world war in well-known operations such as those at Gualdalcanal and Solomon Islands. Airplanes from Saratoga were also among them who attacked Japanese positions at Rabaul, Gilbert Island and the Marshall Islands, and Saratoga`s last war action was support to the invasion of Iwo Jima and raids over the Japanese mainland throughout 1945. In several of these actions USS Saratoga were damaged, and was one of many ships that were attacked by Kamikaze-airplanes and submarines. But despite intense and often hard fighting Saratoga survived the war. But after the Japanese capitulation in late 1945, Saratoga was looked upon as to old for further service, and was marked for being a target for USA`s atomic bomb testing in the Marshall Islands. In 1946 the tests started, and after the first test called "Able", Saratoga was still afloat but damaged. But the next test ended Saratoga`s proud history. On 25 July 1946 at 8:35 the underwater test "Baker" took place, merely three hundred meters from Saratoga, and under this test Saratoga disappeared in the deep. The wreck of Saratoga rest on her keel in a good condition on a depth of sixty one meters in the lagoon at Bikini Atoll. Several of the airplanes that were on board under the testing in 1946 can still be seen, and despite serious damage on the flight deck and in the hull on her starboard side, is this a majestic shipwreck. Several Internet sites has more information on this wreck...
