Andrea Doria was named after a 16th century prince and admiral, who
defended Genoa against her many enemies. She was extremely luxurious
and was considered to be flagship of the Italian Line.
On the 25th of July 1956 at 23h22, while navigating through a dense
fog under the command of Captain Piero Calamai, she collided the Stockholm,
a Swedish freighter. This disaster has no logical explanation, it
could have and should have been avoided, but the radar readings aboard
the Stockholm were misinterpreted. Although badly damaged with a smashed
bow, she remained afloat. The Andrea Doria suffered a mortal blow;
she started to list immediately as water gushed through a huge hole
in her starboard side. The following radio messages were transmitted
after the collision. At 23h22 (Stockholm) "We have collided with
another ship", 23h35 (Doria), "We are bending impossible
to put lifeboats at sea send immediate assistance" 24h09 (Stockholm)
: "Badly damaged. Full bow crushed, Our n°1 hold filled with
water. We have to stay in our position." Messages continued all
night telling minute by minute accounts of this tragedy.
The arrival of the French liner Ile de France was heaven sent. She
saved most of the wrecked and was kept in memories for that reason.
At 4h30, the last passenger, Robert Hudson was saved by the refueller
Robert E. Hopkins. Eleven hours after the collision, the Andrea Doria
went down. This event was filmed and retransmitted worldwide. Of the
1,706 passengers aboard, 46 where killed, mostly on the initial impact.
