General Von Steuben var på reise fra Pillau til Swinemunde da hun ble torpedert på natten av den Sovjetiske ubåten S 13 den 10. Februar 1945, nord for Stolpe Bank. Ombord var det over 3300 mennesker, både sivile flyktninger og sårede soldater fra Østfronten, og et stort antall sykepleiere og doktorer. General Von Steuben ble truffet av to torpdoer fra S 13 som var under kommando av Alexander Marinesko som også hadde torpedert Wilhelm Gustlof den 30. General Von Steuben was on a journey from Pillau to Swinemunde when she was torpedoed in hte night by the Sovjet submarine S 13 on 10. February 1945, north of Stolpe Bank. On board there were more than 3300 people, both civilian refugees and wounded soldiers from the Eastern front, and a large number of nurses and doctors. General Von Steuben was hit by two torpedoes from S 13 whowas under command of Alexander Marinesko who also had torpedoed Wilhelm Gustlof on 30. January, and sank in the deep in less than seven minutes with the loss of many lives. Only three hundred people survived this sinking.
