Uranus was built in Breivik in 1925 and was put to serive late same year. Until the German invasion of Norway in April 1940 she did her job as a freighter, and was after the outbreak of the war used in the Home fleet in Norway and was several times attacked by Allied airplanes. But Uranus survived the second world war and the Allied intense Anti-Shipping missions along the Norwegian coastline. 3. July 1948 Uranus is on her last voyage from Bergen to Tromsø with a cargo of miscellaneous goods. After having had to stop because of dense fog north of Ålesund, Captain James Hansen decides to continue their voyage towards Tromsø. But in the night of 5. July Uranus hit ground outside Stokkøya, and is stuck high on the ground taking in water. A message is delivered to another ship about the situation, and assistance is requested. Several ships comes to the rescue, and parts of the cargo is unloaded which is in grave danger to get under water. On the morning after Uranus has taken in a lot of water and the ship get a listing toward port side, and they keep the engine running just to manage to hold the ship on the ground. But Uranus get afterwards an increased listing, and at 07:15 the engine stops. 09:55 the salvage steamer Parat to the site, but twenty minutes later Uranus slides of the ground and disappears in the deep. Today the wreck rest on its keel with a slight listing towards starboard on a depth of seventy five to ninety meters outside Stokksundet. The wreck is in a good condition, and you can still see many details from the time before the loss of the ship in 1948, but rumors say that the ship bell and the compass has been salvaged by divers and given to the owner...
