The steamship Vestra
was owned by the Haugesunds company Richard Jansen, and did under
the second world war service for the Germans. She sailed with
Norwegian crew, but had a own flak crew consisting of German soldiers
which manned the antiaircraft guns on board. Vestra laid at anchor
in Haugesund under a journey from Nordmøre to Sauda with
a cargo of limestone when she was attacked by Bristol Beaufighter
planes form the British RAF squadrons 235, 248 and 404 on the
afternoon on 21. October 1944. The crew which were below deck
never got time to man the antiaircraft guns. After several rapid
hits from the British airplanes the vessel sank down in the deep
with her bow first, and the whole crew got away from the assault
without injuries. Under the assault several other vessels were
damaged, among these the German cargo freighter Eckenheim who
later found her final rest outside Farsund in 1945. Today the
wreck stands on her keel as a classic " Donald Duck" wreck with
the bow pointing towards north in Haugesund harbor. The wreck
of Vestra rest on a depth of forty to fifty meters right outside
UMOE shipyard...
