Heimnes
kantret utenfor Haugesund by sør for Salhus 16. Juni 1966. Heimnes
var på reise fra Sandnes til Hardanger med en last av bygningsmaterialer
og en besetning på to mann da de ble tatt av sterk strøm
i Karmsundet og traff grunn. Skroget sprang lekk, og en stund senere
tippet skipet over og sank. Besetningen kom fra ulykken uten skader.
Heimnes ble lagt ned i Bergen i 1870 under navnet Skjold for det norske
selskapet Det Stavangerske Dampskibsselskab, men ble gjennom årene
solgt flere ganger før hun endte opp med navnet Heimnes under
de siste eierne på Hebnes. Vraket
står idag pent på bunnen nær Karmøy broen på
en dybde av femten meter og er lett å finne. Stedet er derimot
utsatt for sterk strøm, så forsiktighet før et dykk
er en nødvendighet...
Heimnes capzised outside Haugesund city
south of Salhus 16. June 1966. Heimnes was on a journey from Sandnes
to Hardanger with a cargo of building material and a crew of two
men when they were struck by strong currents in Karmsundet and
hit ground. The hull developed a leak, and a while later the ship
tipped over and sank. The crew got away from the accident without
injuries. Heimnes was laid down in Bergen in 1870 under the name
Skjold for the Norwegian company Det
Stavangerske Dampskibsselskab, but were sold several
times through the years before she ended up with the name Heimnes
under the last owners on Hebnes. The wreck stands today neatly
on the bottom near the Karmøy bridge on a depth of fifteen
meters and is easy to find. The site on the other hand is heavily
exposed to heavy currents, so precaution before diving is a must...

Used in company's local Ryfylke routes, at first Stavanger-Sauda-Sandeid
and Stavanger-Sauda together with Haukelid. In 1884 the company's
Rogaland (later Kvitsøy) took over Skjold's part of this service
and Skjold was used as "reserve". Around 1896(?) she was
placed in service Stavanger-Skjoldastraumen in Tysvær, extended
to Skjold in 1908. In the spring of 1909 she was in service Stavanger-Høgsfjord,
then reserve again in 1910 - often laid up in Børevigå
in Stavanger. In the summer of 1912 she touched the bottom in Småsjøsundet
sailing into Jørstadvåg at Ombo, developed a leak and
sank in shallow waters alongside the quay in Jørstadvåg.
No-one was hurt. Raised by Br. Anda, Hundvåg, Stavanger, towed
to Jadarholm, Stavanger and laid up. Sold "as-is" on Sept.
20-1912 to C. Borgen, Hetland near Stavanger, renamed Morild. Repaired
and converted to freighter, 90.1’ x 15.8’ x 8.2’,
73.27 gt. Sold on Febr. 22-1913 to A/S Morild (C. Borgen), Hetland.
Sold on Oct. 23-1915 to Andreas A., Alfred A. & Andreas A. Kvalevåg,
Hammerfest, registered Hammerfest Apr. 12-1919. Sold on Apr. 7-1920
to Karl & Nils Lande, Hammerfest. Went bankrupt on May 10-1922
and the vessel taken over by Norges Bank, Hammerfest Branch, Hammerfest
as creditors. Sold on March 23-1925 to Alex. Andreassen & Sønner,
Tromsø, registered Tromsø Oct. 28-1925. Went bankrupt
in Dec.-1926, sold on Dec. 6 that year to Johannes Andreassen, Tromsø.
Sold on Aug. 1-1928 to Nekolai Dahl, Trondheim. Sold on Jan. 6-1939
to Porsgrunds Dampskibsselskab, Porsgrunn, rebuilt - 79 gt, a 2cyl
2tev Bolinder rm 96bhp motor installed. Back in service in Sept.-1939?
Cargo service Porsgrunn-Oslo (?). Rebuilt in 1946, 86 gt. Sold on
May 28-1954 to Grenlands Mek. Verksted, Porsgrunn, somewhat rebuilt,
87.17 gt. Sold on Oct. 6-1954 to Tellef Hansen, Borhaug, Lista, in
coastal service (Oslo-Stadt), mostly with cement and fertilizer. Sold
on Febr. 28-1966 to Berdines Hebnes, Hebnes in Ryfylke, coastal service.
Renamed Heimnes on May 14-1966. On June 16-1966 she was en route to
Hardanger with building materials (for prefabricated houses) from
Sandnes as deck cargo. Had just been by Bøvågen on Karmøy
to load bricks at Bø Teglverk. On her way north she was caught
by the strong currents in Salhus in Karmsundet, hit a rock, developed
a leak, capsized and sank quickly...
