The steamer Olaf Kyrre shipwrecked at Kvitholmen lighthouse outside Ålesund on 10 July 1909 under a journey from Trondheim to Bergen. Olaf Kyrre was built in Bergen for Nordenfjeldske, and was out in service as a passenger ship in the Coastal Express together with the steamer Sirius. But Olaf Kyrre was not the best fit for service in the Coastal Express, and was later retired from the service. Olaf Kyrre was also the first Norwegian ship that got installed electric lights, and the ship was nicely embellished for the passengers comfort. After the accident at Kvitholmen in 1909 the ship was standing on the reefs for a while before the sea broke down the ship into the deep. And here Olaf Kyrre was left to herself until the sports divers Bjørn O. Eide and Knut M. Storvik found the wreck debris in 1987. Today the the remains of Olaf Kyrre rest on e depth of axxproxamately twenty meters at the reefs right north of Kvitholmen. It is only spread remains of the ship left, but can anyway provide an exciting dive. To get out to the wreck you need nice weather and a boat...
