Sørland var Norges første sivile skip som ble senket av tyskerne under invasjonen av Norge, operasjon Weserübung, den 9 april 1940. Sørland befant seg i de samme vann som tyskernes Kampfgruppe V som var på retning mot Oslo, og ble tatt under ild av R18 og R19 tidlig på morgenen, og skipet tok raskt fyr. Kapteinen på Sørland, Asbjørn Martinsen, satte kursen mot land, og skuta strandet i nærheten av Elle fyrhus nær Skiphelle i Akershus fylke. Ut av mannskapet på seks mann, omkom to mennesker. Skuta var lastet med papir og mat.Restene av Sørland er funnet, og befinner seg litt sør for Skiphelle ved Drøbak. Det er meget lite igjen av skipet som ligger på tre meters dyp..
