The steamer Donau with a size of 9035 gross tons was normally transporting Norwegian Jews from Norway to Germany during the war, but on this last voyage she was loaded with war equipment for the Austrian mountain rangers that were part of the German occupational forces in Norway. Donau was sabotaged by Max Manus with a " little help " from a few Limpet mines which he placed under water on the ship in Oslo. It was meant that these mines should sink Donau in open waters, but the mines went off to early and the captain onboard Donau was able to rescue the ship and her cargo. After the explosions the captain set course straight towards land and Donau sank in the bay of Skiphelle. There she was standing until 1953, when Einar Høvding took the wreck and towed her to Oslo and cut her to pieces. Today there are just some of the cargo left of this big ship, and this includes trucks, boogies and remains of a cannon. The remains is located in the bay of Skiphelle a bit south of Drøbak in Akershus county on a depth of twenty to twenty five meters. The site can easily be reached by car...
